    Hear Ye, Hear Ye!

    ANOTHER ROUND OF THE

    BVPA Peer Consultation Group

    has begun:

    Fall 2024 SCHEDULE

    Begins Friday, September 13, 2024!

Meetings are a free benefit for BVPA Members

    & Associate Members

and are eligible for 1 CEU per meeting

Interested non-members are encouraged to join BVPA

    in order to attend.

Peer Consultation Meetings provide an opportunity for members to provide one another with valuable information to increase the efficacy of our work, as well as provide an opportunity to engage in “best practices” for consultation about difficult cases.  As you may recall, one of the best risk management practices, when dealing with difficult clients or situations, is to document peer consultation in your notes.

In addition to consultations on individual cases brought by participants, issues of general concern that we address include professional liability questions, compliance with regulations, the impact of changes in legislation, insurance guidelines, and practical questions about the business of running a practice.  Additionally, you may have a specific area of expertise that you would be willing to share with the group, such as training in specific treatment modalities, expertise with certain populations, teletherapy expertise, or insights that come from years of practice.

Please join us and take advantage of this free membership benefit.  Our FALL 2024 meeting schedule begins at 12:00 PM Central Time, on Friday, September 13, and then continues at 12:00 PM one Friday every month, through February 21, 2025. (Usually the 3rd Friday of the month, but some date changes occur due to conflict with our scheduled CEU events. )

PLEASE NOTE SCHEDULE CHANGES SINCE OUR ORIGINAL ANNOUNCEMENT, DUE TO CONFLICT WITH SOME OF OUR 3-HOUR CEU EVENTS AND THE ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING.

Meetings run for 1 hour. Registration is for the full series of meetings, but we understand that scheduling conflicts come up, so if you can't make a particular session, please notify drsaralittlephd@gmail.com.

Registration is limited to 12 participants,

    so please register early.

Major Themes and Issues in Multicultural Counseling & Therapy

    3 CEUS

    with:

    Charles Ridley, Ph.D., Presenter

    Program Description:

As mental health professionals, we are inundated with information on diversity and multiculturalism, especially about its importance to competent service delivery. The ethical and professional mandate is for us to demonstrate multicultural competence. Yet, there is a proliferation of confusion, competing perspectives, and even polemics on the topic. How are we to make sense of it all? Many psychologists are left with the nagging sense that something is missing, that they are uncertain about their own multicultural competence, and that ultimately, they are left to surmise whether they are fulfilling the diversity mandate.

This workshop provides a conceptual framework that organizes the major themes and issues of service delivery to clients across racial, ethnic, and cultural lines. The framing is relevant to all mental health professionals, regardless of their specialties. Translating the framework into practical application is a component of this training.

    Learning Objectives:

By the end of this program, participants will be able

    1. To map the big picture and little pictures of multicultural counseling.

    2. To clarify what we know from the research.

    3. To explain the core components of multicultural counseling competence.

    4. To provide an example of multicultural case conceptualization.

    When: Friday,  February, 7, 2025 from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Where: Online via Zoom (link will be emailed 3 days before the event)

Cost: BVPA Members Free, Non-Members $80, TPA Members 10% discount at registration with TPA Member Number, Student Non-Members $10.

    About our Speaker

With more than 30 years of personal experience in "light & sound" meditation, Tai Chi, qigong, and Sheng Zhen Meditation, combined with 14 years of teaching, I am dedicated to guiding you along this meditative path. As you nurture inner peace and develop a clearer prosperity mindset, your leadership style and creativity will naturally harmonize with your unique approach to life.

My dedication to the practice of wholeness stems from my background as an architect, where I obtained a bachelor's degree in Environmental Design from TAMU and a Master of Architecture from the University of Houston. My personal challenges with mental and physical health led me to investigate the profound connection between the subconscious mind and emotional wellbeing, deepening my understanding of whole-health beyond mental health.

Today, I am committed to supporting a new generation of emerging and revitalized leaders who aspire to embrace a culture of whole-health for themselves, their families, and their teams.

Since my return to TAMU in 2017, I have joined the faculty in the Kinesiology and Sport Management department as an adjunct instructor, teaching courses such as Meditation for Stress & Anxiety and Meditation for Leaders. In addition, R.E.S.T. will be launching at the TAMU College of Medicine to third year medical students at the Willow Brook Campus in connection to the Methodist Hospital.

My passion for promoting whole-health has garnered grant funding for initiatives like TAMU Urban Farm United (TUFU), an aeroponic project aimed at supplying fresh produce to the campus food pantry, known as the 12th Can. Aggies Meditate, another grant-funded initiative focused on social sustainability, provides meditation classes for the campus community, including students, faculty, and staff. The success of Aggies Meditate has paved the way for additional funding to develop a training program for dedicated meditation students, enabling them to promote Meditation In Motion As Medicine across campus through student organizations.

OCD: Overview of Diagnosis and Treatment with ERP (3 CEUs)

    with:

    Dr. Annie Ren, PsyD

    Licensed Psychologist

    Program Description:

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a complex and often misunderstood mental health condition. Its symptoms can sometimes overlap with generalized anxiety. This overlap can make OCD challenging to identify, yet accurate diagnosis is critical to effective treatment.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), a core treatment within the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) framework, is the gold-standard intervention for OCD. ERP focuses on helping clients confront their fears in gradual and intentional steps, while learning to cope with these anxiety-provoking situations without the compulsive behaviors that cause the main impairment in OCD. This workshop introduces mental health professionals to ERP, emphasizing the complexities and often co-occurring subtypes of OCD and the practical application of this evidence-based approach.

    Learning Objectives:

By the end of this program, participants will be able:

    1. Recognize the distinguishing features of OCD.
    2. Identify the key components of effective ERP interventions.
    3. Create a "fear ladder" as an ERP treatment plan for a case of OCD.
    4. Avoid common pitfalls in administering ERP.
    5. Describe the typical course of progression of OCD and evaluate whether this course of ERP is effective for the client.
    6. Decide when to refer cases of OCD to specialists and how to find them.

    When: Friday,  June 6, 2025 from 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Where: Online via Zoom (link will be emailed 3 days before the event)

Cost: BVPA Members Free, Non-Members $80, TPA Members 10% discount at registration with TPA Member Number, Student Non-Members $10.
