Case Conceptualization via Thematic Mapping: A Transtheoretical, Transdiagnostic Clinical Method

(3 CEUs)

with Dr. Charles Ridley, Professor of Counseling Psychology

Texas A&M University

Program Description: Throughout our careers, we are called upon to form  coherent conceptualizations of our cases-- for our supervisors and supervisees, for professional and peer consultations, for our ability to design a coherent treatment plan, and certainly for the benefit of our clients themselves.  However, the lack of standardization in teaching this fundamental skill, combined with the proliferation of theories and evidence-based protocols in psychotherapy, has left most of us struggling with how to conceptualize our clients' issues and how to communicate our understanding of these issues to both clients and colleagues.

Thematic Mapping is a tool that addresses this dilemma.  It is a pattern-analysis method of case conceptualization. Its theoretical foundation lies in a convergence of principles from the transtheoretical model, interactional counseling, and behavioral consistency theory. The method employs strategies to develop a holistic clinical picture of clients by unambiguously identifying and interpreting their dysfunctional patterns.

Learning Objectives

1. To explain the conceptual framework of the method.
