The Evolving Basics of Competent Therapy

with Gender and Sexual Minority Clients

Dr. Richard Reams,
Associate Director of Counseling Services at Trinity University

We hope you join us for our last professional development event of 2017! We will tack on our annual holiday party immediately following the presentation, so feel free to attend one or both events. Continuing education events are free to BVPA members!

Course Description
Every psychologist has sexual minority and gender minority (LGBTQ) clients--whether or not the psychologist is aware of their presence. All psychologists--including those who do not include treating LGBTQ clients among their specialty areas--need to know up-to-date basics of providing culturally competent practice to clients who happen to be LGBTQ. There is an expanding diversity of LGBTQ people--pansexuals, the 'mostly straight,' and those who are gender nonbinary, for example. This seminar will help ensure that you are not puzzled by the clients whose identity and life experience don't fit with your previous LGBT training.
Learning objectives:

1) Utilize up-to-date terminology regarding transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) persons

2)  Identify and describe five diverse groups of TGNC persons

3)  Identify and describe seven developments in our understanding of the diversity of sexual-minority persons

4) Identify and describe sexual orientation identities other than gay, lesbian and bisexual.
