Parenting

with:

Dr. Christine Adams, Licensed Psychologist

Program Description:

Parenting involves navigating both timeless challenges and those unique to the modern world. This 3-hour seminar equips therapists with evidence-based strategies to support parents as they address classic concerns such as fostering emotional resilience, self-discipline, empathy, and social skills, alongside modern stressors like technology, shifting family structures, and societal pressures.

Participants will explore universal parenting challenges, including managing behavior, setting boundaries, and cultivating healthy family relationships, while also addressing modern issues such as children’s mental health, technology use, and social media influences. Drawing from developmental psychology, family systems theory, and contemporary therapeutic methods, this seminar provides practical tools to help parents raise confident, well-adjusted children.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this seminar, participants will be able to:

1.     Understand Parenting Challenges Across Eras and Modern Parenting Concerns:

o    Explain how parenting expectations and roles have evolved, identifying the interplay between timeless, universal challenges and modern stressors.

o    Differentiate classic parenting concerns, such as fostering self-discipline, emotional resilience, and empathy, from contemporary issues like technology use, societal pressures, and digital safety.

o    Recognize the common challenges faced by today’s parents, including managing screen time, supporting mental health, and navigating the impact of social media on children.

2.     Foster Healthy Parent-Child Dynamics:

o    Teach evidence-based strategies for nurturing self-esteem, social skills, and positive character traits in children.

o    Guide parents in setting appropriate boundaries and implementing effective discipline, while promoting empathy and emotional regulation.

o    Increase parental understanding of why certain strategies are more effective over time, explaining the logic behind parenting methods that yield lasting results.

3.     Intervene with Aggressive and Disruptive Behaviors:

o    Identify the roots and risk factors for aggressive or antisocial behaviors in children, considering developmental, familial, and environmental influences.

o    Develop treatment plans using evidence-based approaches to manage defiance, aggression, and disruptive behaviors, while protecting children’s self-esteem.

4.     Support Parents Through Effective Therapeutic Techniques:

o    Build trust and therapeutic alliances with families, including resistant parents, to foster collaborative problem-solving and behavioral change.

o    Tailor parenting interventions to align with each family’s unique values, dynamics, and needs.

5.     Integrate Knowledge into Practice:

o    Use case vignettes to apply theoretical knowledge and therapeutic techniques in real-world scenarios.
