Program Description: This is an advanced workshop dealing with issues specific to counseling individuals considering /undergoing /having undergone gender transition. Presenters on this panel of experienced providers will address issues surrounding gender transition, such as working with adults in relationships, working with children and families, understanding the medical aspects of gender transition, and legal considerations (including recent legal cases) in Texas. 

NOTE: BVPA recommended that participants also register for our February 23, 2024 event, "Gender Identity in the Context of the LGBTQIA+ Community," in which the Director and members of the Brazos Valley Pride Community Center addressed a variety of  broader concerns and issues related to working with LGBTQIA+ clients, from the client perspective. If you missed that presentation, a recording of "Gender Identity in the Context of the LGBTQIA+ Community" is available directly from the Pride Community Center. Learning Objectives: Participants will 

  • gain familiarity with a variety of issues surrounding gender transition
  • become more knowledgeable when discussing client concerns around gender transition
  • have a better understanding of the medical aspects of gender transition
  • gain knowledge about the realities of gender transition vs. the myths
  • gain knowledge about the legal status of  individuals considering, undergoing or having undergone gender transition
  • learn of resources and supports for clients dealing with gender transition

About our Presenters

David Brown, J.D., is a long-time, bilingual civil rights lawyer who brings a lifetime of dedication to justice and equity, and nearly two decades’ worth of litigation experience, to Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund's legal work. He has led teams challenging discrimination against transgender people and restrictions on reproductive rights in state and federal courts, including the United States Supreme Court. He currently oversees TLDEF’s rapidly growing legal team. As TLDEF’s legal director, he won the first decision striking down a coverage ban for transgender health care anywhere in the South; and brought a suit in the New York courts that lead to the adoption of the nation’s strongest policy for protecting the rights of transgender people in jail. Before coming to TLDEF, he was a co-founder of the Lawyering Project, an organization dedicated to advancing reproductive healthcare access through an intersectional approach to challenging state- imposed restrictions on abortion and other care. He has also served as an attorney with the Center for Reproductive Rights and practiced with the firm of Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton. Before becoming a lawyer, he was an LGBTQ activist and human rights grant maker in Latin America. David graduated from the University of Michigan Law School and Pomona College.



Helen Friedman, Ph.D. (she/her/hers) is a clinical psychologist in private practice in St. Louis and remotely to all PsyPact states. She has specialized in gender identity for over 30 years. Additional specialties include sexual trauma, sexual compulsivity, dissociative disorders, and PTSD. She has presented on these topics at national and international scientific conferences and has made numerous appearances on television, radio, and in print (New York TimesWashington PostJerusalem PostSunday Times of LondonLos Angeles TimesBoston GlobeUSA TodayNew York PostPsychology TodayFORTUNE, CosmopolitanNew Woman, Mademoiselle, Redbook, YM, CosmoGIRL!Wall Street Journal OnlineHuffington PostTIME.com, WebMD, Salon.com, abcnews.com, nbcnews.com, health.com, etc.). For 7 1/2 years, she hosted "PsychTalk" on KDHX Radio, for which she received the Community Partnership Award from BJC Behavioral Health Services “for providing thoughtful mental health education.” Dr. Friedman is a past president of the St. Louis Psychological Association; a recipient of the SASH (Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health) Merit Award; and among the first 31 healthcare professionals worldwide to become a WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) Certified Provider. She is featured in the book, The Successful Therapist.



Dr. Matt Hoffman, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, is an Assistant Dean and Clinical Associate Professor in the College of Nursing at Texas A&M University. He is a family nurse practitioner with more than a decade of experience in primary care and gender affirming hormone therapy in Bryan/College Station. Dr. Hoffman’s professional and scholarly experiences include presentations at local, state, and national meetings and symposia, notably speaking on the use of policy models in nursing, creating psychologically healthy work environments, and development of LGBTQ+ health promotion curricula for healthcare providers. His widely published research focuses on HIV prevention efforts for sexual minority and gender non-conforming adolescents as well as interprofessional prescribing practices of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Dr. Hoffman is a member of numerous professional organizations including Sigma Theta Tau International Nursing Honor Society, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, and the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties among many others. Since Joining Texas A&M in 2012, Dr. Hoffman has served on numerous committees and in elected leadership positions within the Faculty Senate and university at-large. In 2020, Dr. Hoffman was recognized for his acts of service and was announced as the Phyllis R. Frye Advocacy Award winner for his work done at Texas A&M, and within the local community, towards the acceptance and nurturance of transgender faculty, staff, and students.


Caitlin Lyons, LCSW, (she/they) is a therapist in Houston, TX, specializing in working with the LGBTQ+ community. After 8 years of experience as a School Social Worker and Behavior Specialist at schools in and around the Houston area, she transitioned to therapy for adults with The Olive Tree Counseling and Supervision.






Megan A. Mooney, PhD. (she/her/hers) is a licensed psychologist in private practice in Houston, Texas who specializes in serving traumatized children and families, especially LGBTQ+ youth who are disproportionately impacted by a variety of traumatic experiences. She is a member of the clinical faculty with Baylor College of Medicine, adjunct faculty with the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston, and an affiliate member of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. Dr. Mooney is a co-founder of a non-profit that focuses on education and advocacy in support of gender expansive children and their families. Dr. Mooney was granted the 2022 American Psychological Association Services’ Federal Advocacy Award and the 2023 APA State Leadership Award. She was specifically recognized for her advocacy leadership on behalf of LGBTQ+ children, adolescents, and families, most recently in response to political attacks on Texas’ transgender communities.



Robbie N. Sharp, Ph.D., LSSP, graduated from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana and completed her post-doctoral experience at Baylor College of Medicine, where she remained on faculty as a Clinical Assistant Professor in Allied Health (Now Health Professions) and Psychiatry and Behavioral Science. She is experienced in working with those who identify as LGBT in both her clinical practice and as a supervisor and mentor for mental health providers. She has extensively worked with crisis and trauma victims in Houston area schools and in her clinical practice, many of these who are LGBTQ. She is a Co-Founder of Gender Infinity, Inc. of Houston, Texas (https://genderinfinity.org/) and continues to work with gender diverse and expansive children, youth, and their families. She is proud to be a part of the support, advocacy, and education for this diverse population.
