Program Description:  Working with children in therapy requires specific skills and understanding of how children grow, learn, think, and heal. In this program we will explore the unique way that therapists work with children. This program hopes to provide the insights and knowledge necessary to better understand how therapy with children and adolescents occurs. In addition, it gives guidance on how to help parents understand why their child is receiving a referral to a child therapist, as well as assists with making the best choices of clinicians for therapy referrals. Audio and video examples of techniques used in therapy for many different conditions will be shown.

Program Objectives:

By the end of the program, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the origins of play used in therapy
  2. Identify the evidence of the effectiveness of play used in therapy
  3. Identify the different types of therapy used with children and adolescents
  4. Understand the types of childhood conditions that can be treated
  5. Compare talk therapy with children to that with adults
  6. Understand what assessments with children entail and how that is collaborated between the psychologist who does the assessment and the therapist who is counseling with the child
  7. Understand the importance of collaborating with schools/parents/doctors/teachers/school counselors
