Gender Identity in the Context of the LGBTQIA+ Community
(2.5 CEUs)
by Katrina Stewart (She/Her/Hers)
Executive Director, Pride Community Center, Brazos Valley
Program Description:
According to the Williams Institute's 2023 report 1, 5.5% of US adults (13.9 million) identified as LGBT in 2021. While identifying as LGBTQ+ is definitely not, in and of itself, a mental illness, given the prevalence of mental illness and adjustment disorders in the general population, chances are that at some point in a clinician's career, they will discover that one or more of their clients is in this population. Some clients may enter therapy clearly articulating concerns about their sexual orientation or gender identity while others may not share these concerns until months have passed. Still others may have no gender or sexual orientation concerns, and their issues have little to nothing to do with these aspects of their identity.
Some clinicians have had training in helping various populations, while others have been more restricted in their training and experiences. In today's climate--and particularly in Texas-- having the tools and understanding to work with such clients is critical, regardless of whether the clinician initially set out to serve this population or discovers it along the way.
This program hopes to provide the resources, tools and knowledge to help practitioners to better understand and engage with this population. The program will consist of a presentation by Katrina Stewart along with an appearance by one or more members of the Texas LGBTQ community, who will be able to discuss their experience(s) from the client point of view.
