Program Description: University/College student mental health struggles have been well documented over the past several years. Those of us in the field know that they have not started as a result of COVID, but COVID has certainly made an impact on how these issues are presented in clinical settings. This seminar will explore the mental health trends of college students based on the data from the Center for Collegiate Mental Health. The implications for the demand for services at college counseling centers and the creation of Clinical Load Index (CLI) will be explored as it has dramatically impacted referrals to private practice across the country. Additionally, the seminar will discuss the role of parents and we will have a discussion regarding helping parents navigate mental health issues of their young adults. Lastly, observations regarding overall student avoidance of conflict post COVID and the connection to social anxiety and low self-confidence will be addressed.
Program Objectives:
By the end of the seminar, participants will be able to:
1. Identify the mental health trends of college students over the past 10 years.
2. Understand the impact of the demand for services on college campuses and its implications for private practice.
3. Define the Clinical Load Index and how it impacts the types of referrals coming from college campuses.
4. Identify tools to help parents navigate raising adult children with mental health struggles.
5. Identify ways that COVID has impacted how young adults present in clinical settings.
