Program Description: This 2-hour interactive workshop will explore how AI has entered the therapy room. Many people are now using AI to explore mental health diagnosis, interventions, and self-help and techniques. Discuss how AI is changing the world and the work of psychologists. Learning Objectives: By the end of the session, the learner will be able to: Identify common ways clients may use generative AI for mental health information, emotional support, self-assessment, or assistance between therapy sessions. Evaluate potential benefits and clinical risks associated with client use of AI. Develop strategies for discussing AI use with clients and incorporating questions about AI into assessment, treatment planning, psychoeducation, and ongoing psychotherapy. About Our Speaker Karen Nelson, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor at Sam Houston State University Russel and Glenda Gordy College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she works within the Department of Primary Care and Clinical Medicine. In her role, she teaches medical students and provides therapy services at the SHSU Physicians Clinic. Her research interests include using AI as a tool for communication skills training for medical students.
