Emotion differentiation plays a critical role in mental health and interpersonal functioning. This presentation highlights clinically relevant research and introduces a practical tool to help clients increase emotional awareness, reduce anger, and strengthen interpersonal relationships to support overall psychological well-being.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define emotion differentiation and explain its relevance to anger regulation and interpersonal functioning.
  • Describe research linking emotion differentiation to positive mental health and treatment outcomes.

About our Presenters:

Susan C. Duncan, PhD, is the Executive Director and a counselor at DA Counseling. Drawing from over a decade of clinical practice, her work bridges empirical research and applied therapeutic strategies to improve emotional awareness and relational outcomes. She co-developed the Feeling Grid, a cognitive tool designed to help clients identify, differentiate, and regulate emotions, particularly anger. Dr. Duncan co-authored the self-published book You Are Here with Dr. Bryan Duncan based on their 25+ years of clinical experience working with clients to improve their relationships. Dr. Susan Duncan also holds the position of lecturer in the Department of Psychology and Philosophy at Sam Houston State University, and teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in statistics, research methods, and psychometrics.

Bryan T. Duncan, PhD, is clinical director and psychologist of DA Counseling. He provides individual, group, family counseling within his private practice. Dr. Duncan co-developed the Feeling Grid, a cognitive tool designed to help clients identify, differentiate, and regulate emotions, particularly anger. He co-authored the self-published book You Are Here with Dr. Susan Duncan based on their 25+ years of clinical experience working with clients to improve their relationships. Dr. Bryan Duncan was recently named assistant professor of Behavioral Medicine/Psychology in the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Sam Houston State University.
