Program Description: Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) offers a clear, evidence-based framework for understanding and transforming relationship distress through the lens of attachment. In this workshop, Beatriz Lloret, M.A., LPC, will provide an overview of how EFT conceptualizes couple dynamics and guides the therapeutic process from reactivity toward secure connection. Participants will review the core attachment patterns - anxious, avoidant, and fearful-avoidant - and how these shape the negative interaction cycles that keep couples stuck. Beatriz will demonstrate, through theory and clinical examples, how EFT therapists identify and work with partners’ protective strategies, access the underlying attachment needs and emotions, and facilitate moments of connection that repair and strengthen the bond. The goal of this presentation is to help therapists understand how and why EFT works; offering a deeper grasp of its attachment-based foundation, process of change, and relevance across clinical modalities. Learning Objectives: 1. Describe the theoretical foundations of Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and its basis in attachment science and emotion theory. 2. Differentiate the primary attachment patterns: anxious, avoidant, and fearful-avoidant; and identify how these influence couple dynamics. 3. Explain the concept of the negative cycle and how it functions as the common enemy in distressed relationships. 4. Outline the three stages and nine steps of the EFT change process and how therapists guide partners from reactivity to emotional engagement. 5. Recognize the role of protective strategies and vulnerable emotion within the EFT model and how these shape the path toward secure bonding.
