  WHAT IS PSYCHOTHERAPY?

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy or "therapy," is a form of treatment in which you meet with a mental health professional to relieve emotional distress, improve relationships, cope with pain or medical conditions, and address problematic behaviors. Even when not in distress, people choose to enter into psychotherapy to improve their overall functioning and reach their higher personal and professional goals. A variety of mental health professionals are qualified to provide psychotherapy, including licensed psychologists, social workers, licensed professional counselors, and licensed marriage and family counselors. When you meet with a therapist, you can talk openly in a confidential setting. There are various forms of therapy (i.e., couples, individual, family, etc.) and therapists practice under a multitude of modalities (e.g., cognitive-behavioral therapy, psychodynamic therapy, solution-focused therapy, etc.).
